"A modern aesthetic and warmth do not need to conflict," says interior designer Caitlin Murray real estate lawyer Vaughan . Interior designer Ginger Curtis of Urbanolgy Designs states that the cozy-modern combo is just one she layouts frequently. In reality, she says it is becoming so popular that it is now considered a design style all of its own: contemporary rustic. "Rustic isn't what it used to be. Gone are the times when rustic intended four-poster beds made out of clips, antler chandeliers and dimly-lit rooms. The new modern-rustic looks blend clean lines with substances, rich in texture and ruggedly handsome. Think white walls and exposed beams and rafters, with a cowhide or vintage Turkish rug under a newly-upholstered couch in the ideal performance cloth. It's a hot and clean appearance loaded with charm and character. The minimalist at heart will require this look and pare it back, while the maximalist will layer and indulge on unique, one-of-a-kind pieces"
A Piece of Cake
"In today's design world, we think any mix of design, fabulous and function is possible!" says interior designer Jenn Feldman. "We are very protective of the way the architectural elements of a space come together. The doors, doors, casings and walls should connect in a way that retains the look of the space tidy, linear and overall modern. I always state that the most classic and clean components of a space ought to be its own bones. Then, by layering in textures, colors and patterns, we can evoke the private, intimate feeling we would like to create for our clients and for the room we have designed." Jenn says knowing the specific feeling her customers want is vital to her process. One client may define cozy than another. "We are always coming into the design procedure emotionally -- how can our customer want to sense? How do we create that feeling in the space for them? And how can we combine polish and our eyesight into the space at precisely the exact same moment? Many days I look at my job kind of as a baker at a big, gorgeous dessert store, which makes these ideal JFD cakes! We combine in a great deal of great, essential ingredients and come up with this flavored recipe. Then we layer in these fantastic icings and aesthetic details tailored to every "cake." It is exciting to have the creative opportunity to earn a different mix all the time, while retaining the JFD basic design principles of the room constant and disciplined throughout the procedure."
Go Monochrome

It is about that ideal mix of layers and textures working together and playing with the light in the room to make it work from day to night. "it's very essential for all of us to look spaces that feel homey and comfortable to the owners," says interior designer Wendy Blackband of Blackband Design. She shares they realized that in this modern home. "The dark metals and rigid, contemporary accents in this home are brightened and relaxed by the sunlit, open area and soft cloths. The white linen couches lighten the space and radiate a casual and comfy vibe. These oversized, slipcovered sofas aren't totally tailored to soften the square style. Plush cushions of varying materials and textures, nestled along with down-wrapped foam cushions, offer an extra-cozy seat to snuggle. Earth tones brought in throughout the pillows and accents add depth to the look." Wendy also shares ways to achieve the cozy-modern combo in your home. "It is crucial to begin with a space plan that optimizes the use of an area, followed by furniture selections with comfy cushions and secure edges. Truly understanding the durability of materials being conscious of sharp corners in regard to common walkways is helpful in making furniture decisions along the way. The detail and time that goes into producing the ideal layout and finding appropriate pieces to fill it can be hard, but it's a necessity for successfully completed jobs."
Soften the Starkness
"An attempt to balance the clean lines of a contemporary space with things that are comfortable should be part of every good layout," says interior designer Kirstin Moehlig of TerraCotta Design Build. "In this area, we mixed in warmer wood in the desk visual and tones elements in the soft, chunky rug and furry pillow." Kirstin suggests identifying the harsh elements in a modern design and offsetting them with softer selections.
Texture > Tone
Interior designer Marie Flanigan enjoys starting a design using a fresh, minimalist foundation. She depends on her tried-and-true method of layering in heat. "I favor committing into the warmth of rich textures over tones, opting to bring in things with aged, lived-in endings and luxe materials like plush velvets, delicate wools and tumbled leathers," she states. "I find there is something fresh and unexpected about undergoing the heat of a classic antique side table living within a cooler, more modern space; there's a great deal of energy because juxtaposition. Additionally, it is important to add in those distinctly individual components, such as a curation of purposeful accessories which tell your unique story, to make a space that feels lived in and lovingly gathered over time."
Hip Hyyge
"My time studying design in Denmark taught me definitively that moving contemporary does not come in the exclusion of warmth and coziness," says interior designer Breeze Giannasio. "Their concept of hygge, taking the U.S. now by storm, is testament to this. If we can not be comfortable at home, where can we be comfortable? I believe every room, however modern, should have some thing that just begs one to sink into it and be at ease." 1 peek into her hip-yet-homey office design proves Breeze knows how to Hygge together with the best of them.
The Power of Color
"Creating a space that is both clean and contemporary and warm and cozy is a big part of what defines our design aesthetic, and it's our strategy for each and every job," says interior designer Regan Baker. Her go-to tool? Color. "We love using color, while it's creating tone-on-tone spaces or using pops of color. Adding a pop of colour which also ties to other design components in the area is one of the ways we are in a position to make a modern room feel more comfy and casual. By way of instance, in a living room with neutral gray and brown tones throughout, we'll add a pop of color through something such as an orange chair. This helps bring more interest and fun to the general space"
Simple Tips Tricks
Color is not the only instrument Regan relies on. "There are lots of easy ways to make a space feel more inviting and comfortable," she states. "Adding in throw pillows or blankets is an easy way to make textures, patterns and colours that play a role in making a space comfy, warm and comfy. We love plants and flowers! Bringing in elements of character, whether they're faux or real, can make a large difference in how comfy a space feels. We also like to mix price points to achieve this appearance, so we'll combine a luxury piece like an Eames lounger along with other pieces at a lower price point."
Luxe Layers
"One of our favourite ways of creating a room feel modern and comfy is by introducing beautiful, layered textures throughout the space, often using a colour palette of deep, moody purples, calm blues and cool grays," say designers Laura Umanksy and Blair Foster of Laura U Design. "Layering textures can be a true treat for the artful eye. Pairing fabrics -- such as the smooth sateen of a channel-tufted headboard, the clean quilting of a trendy grey coverlet, the wealthy crushed velvet on a structured ottoman and the glazed linen of custom drapery -- brings warmth to a room" Blair and Laura advise starting with contemporary bases though. "It's important to keep your furniture lines simple and structured to construct a base of a timeless, contemporary style; then, layer in heat in your fabric selections and accessories"
Sit Back Relax
Interior designer Brooke Wagner says she has seen an increase in the demand for modern layout, with more clients desiring clean lines and steel windows or doorways. Brooke strategically means this layout style, aware of the challenges it brings. "When we are working on a contemporary residence, we want to keep the bones in a neutral/warm palette, contrasting that with white walls, wood tones and mixed metals," she says. She nails the comfy element in this living room with one of her favorite tools: upholstered, deep seats.
Conquer Coldness
Jesse DeSanti, chief designer of Jette Creative, states achieving coziness within a modern layout is about adopting contrast and avoiding coldness. She suggests having a mix of old and new furniture and pairing clean structure with standout components -- like this stunning stone fireplace. Jesse also provides guidance for white walls: "I tend to use a white paint with a little pink in it, so I will achieve the clean look without the cold of a blue-white." Pink wins again, my friends. 
Personalized Design
"Modern design will be more minimal, so what you choose to put out includes a heightened significance," says interior designer Elizabeth Krueger. "It is important to find out how every client defines relaxation. Is it being surrounded by items from your journeys, family heirlooms or your favourite artwork? Or is it having oversize pieces of furniture upholstered in plush fabrics? But the final result is accomplished, the method should be deliberate and tailored to the individual it is for," she explains. Though her methods of achieving comfort vary greatly from client to client, she often employs texture to create depth within a modern space.
