Located in a grassy meadow with views of the Wasatch Mountains on one side and the Provo River on the other, the property's design team felt that the structure should be as rugged as the surrounding landscape with all the look of a farmhouse that had evolved over time by a small central structure to a rambling 4,000-square-foot modern retreat.

In the center of the huge home, the fantastic room is designed to resemble an old stone structure -- maybe a century-old farmhouse or barn -- around which the remainder of this house has been constructed. Limestone walls and Douglas fir trusses, stained a weathered gray, give the room an appropriately aged appearance.

The property's structure is motivated by the Adirondack Great Camps constructed in Northeastern New York during the latter half of the 19th century. These historical homes were artful combinations of Swiss chalet and Craftsman design elements. Designer Vern Yip was motivated by famed Chicago-based architect Frank Lloyd Wright when selecting a color palette and design components for your home's living room. The furnishings are a combination of items made by local artisans, architectural salvage and custom pieces, such as the massive illuminated panel behind the sofa that was made to resemble Wright's Tree of Life art glass.

The design of the eco-friendly home is motivated by the Prairie School style espoused by ancient 20th-century architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. Flat roofs, broad overhanging eaves, locally sourced materials and flat lines that tie the home into the surrounding landscape are hallmarks of the Midwestern style. Native grasses, trees and plants help to combine the home to its surroundings, and the crops are drought-tolerant, so they will require minimal maintenance.

Although the high-rise house is completely new construction, designer Vern Yip honored NYC's architectural background by covering the bedroom feature wall in paneling that looks masonry common from the city's 19th-century buildings. Situated on three acres, carefully landscaped with indigenous plants and adjacent to protected natural preserves, the home boasts breathtaking desert views.

Florida is an ideal location for a Spanish-style home, as Spaniards were the first Europeans to maintain this land in the New World. Typical characteristics of this warm-climate design style are low-pitched red tile roofs, stucco exteriors and many times a campanile, or bell-tower-like structure, reminiscent of the first Catholic missions.

As opposed to matching the home's interior layout to the exterior's Spanish architecture, designer Linda Woodrum chose to highlight Florida's familiar tropical colour palettes, and she began from the foyer, where fearless coral stripes encircle guests having "a concept of what to expect, what the house will be about," she clarifies. The lively palette and wide stripes are reminiscent of this beach-cabana fashion popular in 1950s Florida. Neutral ceramic floor tiles don't divert from the eye-catching focal wall and are simple to keep in this sandy beachfront area.

Constructed to resemble Florida's Cracker design -- wood-frame homes built throughout the country by 19th-century settlers -- that the house's deep porches catch tropical breezes in the nearby bay. Additional Cracker impacts are evident, like the shuttered windows, metal roof and a clerestory, or cupola, designed to port inside heat. Early settlers made the Cracker style to cope with Florida's unrelenting humid and hot climate; those houses relied on ocean breezes to maintain the inhabitants cool in the centuries prior to air conditioning. Cracker style is currently seeing a resurgence as Floridians adopt their nation's architectural background and look for energy efficient homebuilding techniques.

It borrows several design characteristics in the rustic mountain homes typical in the remote areas of Appalachia.
